THE MOON HUNG LOW IN the star-studded Texas sky as I slipped through the ranch gates, my heart racing with a mix of anticipation and guilt. I was kicking my own ass for not giving Ashley what she wanted. What I wanted. I couldn’t explain it, but I felt like it was wrong. She was so much better than a quick fuck in a field. I wanted to treat her right.

As I walked along the dirt path, the night air whispered secrets and my mind raced. I kept fighting the urge to go back and chase her down. I could throw her on the ground and fuck her until we were both screaming with pleasure. It would be perfect with the crickets singing their songs. The noise filled the void left by my racing thoughts. Each step seemed to echo in the stillness, a reminder of the delicate balance I now trod. None of this was real for me. Ashley was. It felt wrong to bring her into my fake world.

The house came into view, and as usual, I scanned the area before stepping out of the darkness. Part of me was just waiting for the bogeyman to show up. Something told me it wasn’t a matter of if, but when. I wanted to be as ready as I could be when that moment happened.

I let myself in and locked the door behind me. I sank into the worn armchair without bothering to turn on any lights. The comforting embrace of the old chair wrapped around me like a familiar friend. The memories of Ashley flooded my mind—the stolen glances, the kisses, and the desperate longing to join our bodies. But with each memory came the painful realization that the love I felt for her was nothing more than a mirage—a delicate illusion that would shatter the moment I went back to Chicago to testify.

The sound of a distant horse’s whinny reached my ears, a stark reminder of the responsibilities that awaited me with the rising sun. I was a hired hand. That was it. I was supposed to be worrying about the care of David’s ranch. To indulge in my desires would risk not only my livelihood but my cover. Jesse might be okay with me being friends with Ashley, but I doubted he was ever going to welcome me into the family with open arms. Especially if he knew I’d almost had sex with her in a field.

I sat for a while longer mulling over what I might do. I didn’t want to hurt her. I liked her a lot. She deserved to know the full truth about who I was and the dark past I carried with me.

I had to tell her. I wanted to tell her. But at what cost?

I strummed my fingers on the arm of the chair as I weighed my options. What was the right thing to do? What would Ashley do? I knew she’d be pissed at me for keeping this from her.
